Maui Butterfly Farm
Maui Butterfly Farm

Visiting The Maui Butterfly Farm was one of those things not on my radar that I’m stoked I got to experience. Just south of Lahaina, right next to Leoda’s and the little Olowalu markets, it’s Maui’s only walk-in butterfly house and the only place in the state where you can step inside a space filled with butterflies raised right there on the farm. The Guided Tour
The guided tour lasted about 45 minutes. We loved our guide! She had a ton of facts and answered all of our questions. They’re pretty passionate about saving the Hawaii butterfly population that is still in decline. We got to see the full life cycle up close, from eggs, to caterpillars munching on leaves, chrysalises hanging like little jewels, and finally, the full butterflies themselves. They showed us how to have butterflies land right on our fingers! When you have butterflies on you, time seems to slow down. pretty magical.

Why They’re in Operation
What I loved most was learning that the farm isn’t just for making money (and just so you know, it’s not expensive relative to other things to do on Maui.) It’s a certified Monarch Waystation, focused on conservation and helping boost Hawaii’s butterfly populations. Our guide was super down-to-earth and passionate. This is great for everyone, whether you were there to geek out on the science or just get some epic photos for your instagram.

Worth it?
The entire experience was pretty uplifting. Learning more about the important role butterflies play in keeping our ecosystems balanced gave me new appreciation for these beautiful creatures. If you’re spending time on Maui, this place is worth carving out a morning to experience.
