A FEW LANAI FACTS

Lanaʻi is the 6th largest Hawaiian island and has a population of around 3,000 people.

With a land area of 140.5 square miles, it is located approximately nine miles southwest of Maui and is separated from the island by the Auʻau Channel. Lanai residents live in the township of Lanaʻi City. The island was formerly owned by the Dole Corporation and was once used for pineapple cultivation. Today, Lana’i is a popular tourist destination, known for its luxury resorts, golf courses, and beaches. Hiking, horseback riding, and fishing are also popular activities on the island.

Lanai Pineapple

The island was once owned by Dole Foods and was used to grow pineapples.

At its peak, Lanai was home to over 3,000 acres of pineapple fields, making it the largest plantation in the world. However, due to a number of factors, including competition from other countries and the high cost of labor, pineapple production on Lanai declined steadily throughout the latter half of the 20th century. In 1985, Dole spent $75 million to convert 1,000 acres of pineapple fields into a luxury resort, and in 1991 the company closed its doors on Lanai. Today, pineapples are still grown on Lanai, but only on a small scale. Pineapple plantations can be found in many tropical countries around the world, including Brazil, Thailand, and the Philippines.
